Suvi’s Statues: Fanor Hernández

I know many of you have some statues stored just itching to be shown, and now Saturdays are the time and Suvi’s challenge is the place and you’ve got almost all week to join. This week I’ve got for you a sculptor whose works don’t lie as if he came from Colombia. Maybe because he does.

This lovely surprise happened when we were strolling along Via Appia Antica in Roma. In this post from my first blog are some doors from there, and the second part will come in the future.

In between all the doors our host showed us a villa that used to be private but then the owner wished to evade taxes and was selling it at a very low price on paper. The state of Italy intervened as is its right, and bought it for the requested price. And then an ancient thermal complex from 2nd Century AD was discovered under the vineyard. Only in Roma. They call this archaeological site Capo di Bove.

The garden around the villa hosts an exhibition of bronze statues by Colombian sculptor Fanor Hernández entitled “Materia e vita”, Matter and Life. I don’t know titles of individual statues, but full of life they are. Here is how it went:

Our host (on the right) was leading us along Via Appia Antica for some time, and only when we arrived here I understood why we were in such a rush: the opening hours for this villa were drawing to a close. We were just in time.

The first statue we saw, but considerably older than Fanor, I’d guess.

The first bronze: a bit tired-looking.

But then it started: this one reminded me of a statue at the end of our street in Vienna when father was there on business. Sis named it “I have to go now”.

Just one more hug.

She seems happy.

This one was my favourite.

I couldn’t stop taking photos of her.

Since it was closing, we were rushing along.

More statues.

I’d love to have more time for them.

The former owner was selling this place really cheap to evade taxes, and the State jumped in.
