WPC: Olympic tarock tournament

First Slovenian rapper Ali En used to say with Kraftwerk: “Fun fun fun, sam da ni u Lublan” – “Fun fun fun, as long as it’s not in Ljubljana”. We prove yearly that he was only partially right when we set up the greenest card tournament in my uncle’s garden. This year saw its 14th edition.

The game is tarock, it is Austro-Hungarian in origin and it’s played in threes. Some liken it to bridge or chess. Slovenian Tarok Association is even part of Slovenian National Olympic Committee, they probably just cannot decide if it’s more of a winter or summer sport. We decided for them.

It can be played at national championships, which I was doing for about ten years and won a couple, or it can be played for fun, which is something “real” players tend to smirk at. Maybe that’s why the player who is currently ranking 1st in the national championship was seen nowhere near our garden this year. For it is fun that wins in our garden, fun and good people. (This is why I link to the Weekly Photo Challenge on the subject of fun.)

For every victory, however, one needs experience and expertise. No surprise then that this year father finally stopped holding back on account of our guests (right!), decided to have fun, showed true colours and became Olympic Tarock Champion.

Bravo to him and cin cin to one and all. See you next year, about then and precisely there.
