The Wolf is not pleased

These were taken during our summer stroll around Ljubljana. I might be partly Serbian, but of no faith except that all shall be well. Still I pay more attention to churches than I’d ever expect. I guess that was the idea.

The minaret of the mosque has been built, the rest will follow.

Not only the mosque – the first one in Ljubljana, something else was new, I realise now. The Orthodox Church might have been standing right there all my life and quite a bit more but as I was passing something made me take the photos below. (Possibly it goes without saying that these are exceptions: a vast majority of Slovenians and churches there are Catholic.)

I thought at first that it was the stance of Vuk (translates as ‘Wolf’) Karadžić, the reformer of Serbian language according to the maxim “Write as you speak and read as it is written”. Hence “Njujork” for New York and the like in Serbian newspapers (those that are not in Cyrillic, that is). For some reason I find his expression very telling. What does it say to you?

To me he seems highly disapproving in an “I told you so” manner. A bit condescending. Tired and sad.

Only now as I’ve been searching for some info on the statue I realise that the reason my eyes were drawn to it is that I had never seen it before. It was uncovered a mere month earlier, only to disclose a spelling error in the surname, “Karađić” instead of “Karadžić”. They fixed it in the first month but the Wolf must have known all along they would mess something up.
