Trees being looked at

First, two tree quotations and then some photos from the garden I know the longest.

The true meaning of life is to plant trees, under whose shade you do not expect to sit.
~ Nelson Henderson
(quotation reblogged from Do What You Wish)

A drawing of a tree shows, not a tree, but a tree-being-looked-at.
~ John Berger, “The Sense of Sight”

I wonder if it’s the same if a tree is photographed instead of drawn. Here are some trees from uncle’s garden and some other life forms before the first snow of the season which we just missed. Right now this garden looks completely different (more like it did last year at this time).

Beautiful photos – really like “Bestia in thought” he appears to know something about something that is going on.

    1. Thank you, Dan! 🙂 This is his usual stance and I often ask him “What is it?” and if he drew me a complex equation in the sand, I wouldn’t be shocked much.

I love trees and actually I do draw them! Especially during the winter, when they are without leaves and they look like skeletons. Love the branches and the gnarled trunks ❤

    1. Thank you, Sara. I wonder if you agree that you can only draw a tree-being-looked-at. 🙂

No, also photography shows that you pay attention to them ❤ I do both, but personally I like to draw them as drawing is a very relaxing activity for me. When I need to make my brain stop, I draw.

If you enjoy trees, I recommend reading “Arboreto Salvatico” by Mario Rigoni Stern. I fear you can only find it in Italian, though :/

    1. Thanks, SMSW. 🙂 Mom just told me that it’s 30 cm of snow on this garden right now… Amore cannot be happier that we missed it. 😀
