Welcome to the architecturally acclaimed bird sanctuary, nature reserve Škocjanski zatok on the Slovenian coast.
I’ve posted images from here already, for example this one:
Excuse the blur but I wish to show you the font chosen for this nature reserve that is especially great for birdwatching.
In order to transpose the feeling I had those couple of hours in December as we were strolling around, however, more is needed. And as always, I wish to thank my parents for the great idea and a lovely day.
Today the first half of photos from our visit, those concentrated on birds before they are off to, what is it, Greenland? Some lovely views are saved for the next time.
The circular path is full of stops like this one.
These apertures allow you to see but not be seen.
Let’s see: White-throated Dipper, Common Kingfisher, Little Grebe and Pygmy Cormorant
All of these can be spotted as well.
We didn’t see that many but your usual ducks and swans are nice too.
Here we have a dive in…
A hide-in. And then…
A photo bomb by Mr. Kingfisher himself! 😮 Thank you, I swear, I was only going for the shrub reflection!
Observing the observers.
The round structure from the earlier dive-in photo.
A task for you: “Find the right bird to match.” Goes well with Slovenian bird-marrying holiday we celebrate on March 12th.
This happens when you turn an image upside down and only realise it after watermarking it. 😀
This is better.
This bird is saying goodbye because it’s off to Africa.
I don’t know if these are just cute examples, or birds really fly from here to all these places – Malta, Libya, Angola and South Africa.
For example, a swallow needs 16 days to cover 3800 km to Greenland.
This is a grand building.
I posted photos from the bottom level already. No wildlife was visible under the surface.
Wonderful wood all around.
And here, a fury friend to keep the birds company: a nutria which we have over here in Tuscany too.
A lovely share Manja, the birds are never there when you appear with a camera, but it’s so nice to see there is an eco set-up , just in case you get lucky!
This is just the kind of place that I like to visit. Thanks for taking me along. What a great building and how well it works for its purpose.

Thank you, Claudia! It’s also worth noticing that it’s free entry unless you’re a group.

That is really nice, so that more people can enjoy it, and be encouraged to stop in.

Awesome sighting of that Kingfisher! They’re so skittish, and look so different here.
You had a great birding day!

Oh Deborah, thanks. He flew to this branch just as I was about to click, incredible! And just on the edge of my frame too. 😀

Nice sighting. That looks like the kingfisher Alcedo atthis to me. Never having been to your country, I don’t know whether they are found there
