In the ocean of photos that I’ve taken in the past week, let’s begin with yesterday’s. They just happen to include Siena and its Cathedral.
We shall return to Siena on several more Thursdays, but today let’s have a look at the Cathedral, first from the outside and then on the inside where I was for the first time. And it’s just as overwhelming as Norm said it was.
Then we realised that the entrance is 4 EUR rather than 25 EUR which is how amore remembered from his visit (this must have been for the card that included other entrance fees around Siena), and we decided to enter this amazingly intricate shrine. I’ll post more photos from the inside soon but this is what I mean:
I was quite taken by it all but in the last moment before exiting remembered to snap at every door-resembling entity for tomorrow which is today which is Thursday and doors have their party. By all means recommended.

Hahaha “door-resembling entity” – I like that!
And you’re certainly right about that second-last photo looking very heavenly!

Brings back great memories and once again sent me back to look at the 1800+ pics I took on this trip. Oh well, I guess I won’t be getting much else done this morning – thanks for that 😉
Your featured shot with the horizontal light streaks is my favorite. You did a great job getting the whole facade into that first shot. I seem to remember running out of room as I backed up to try to fit the whole building into the frame. Well done 🙂

Oh, Norm, thank you so much, also for spurring me to enter, it’s spectacular! I loved the ceiling and the windows the most. And that library room! All in all, a superb experience. And I’m glad I got you to relive yours. 🙂

Wow, what a place!! I like that you have a person or two in some of the photos, as it gives perspective as to the real size of the doors. When I see the intricacy of the work on churches and buildings from olden times, I think it’s a good thing that the workers and artists weren’t getting paid by the hour. 🙂

Thank you, Janet. It’s quite difficult to fathom that indeed it were people who built that.

Doors, entrances, gates, portals, whatever you call them, these are beautiful and thank you for sharing them with us. These buildings are so significant in the history of the world. I am glad that they survive to this day and I’m glad you contributed a bit to visit, as I’m sure that fee helps offset what I can only imagine is an enormous maintenance budget.

Oh, true, Dan. If we think about what all we pay for daily and how much, this cost for something so impressive does not compare. And thanks!

I LOVE THIS CATHEDRAL!!! My favorite feature for some reason is the black and white striped marble columns…something about how they stand out against everything else. And they are seen on outside as well. I really enjoyed looking at your pictures this week Manja, truly would love to return to Siena (how many times do I say this???)

Hehe, Denny, if you say it often enough then you shall return… I’m glad you enjoyed my views of it. More coming up in future posts.

Thank you, Jean. Plenty of wicked floors inside as well. I was rather dashing through but there is so much for a careful observer.

Hard to compete with those doors – wow!

Thank you, Jan. The whole thing was obviously built to compete, with other cathedrals in cities such as Florence, Lucca and Orvieto… And then we all benefit.

Great pictures of the gorgeous Siena Duomo, definitely one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. I was there two years ago. Loved Siena. So beautiful, very special place.

Thank you, Angela. I just caught a glimpse of your Milano cathedral post, looking forward to it, only saw it from the outside briefly once. And yes, I agree, Siena is special.

Thank you, Joey. They had gotten a bit cathedral-happy around here. And as I said above – we all profit by their competitiveness.

This is a seriously impressive building – both inside and out! The people standing in front of that massive entrance really gives a good perspective on its size.
