Thursday Doors, April 27 2017

Today will always stay in my memory as “The OF Day”, no matter how they call it now.

The “OF” or “Osvobodilna fronta” was “The Liberation Front”, Slovenian anti-Fascist organisation that formed in 1941. As the Wikipedia says, “The Slovene Partisans were the armed wing of the Liberation Front, which fought in the beginning as a guerilla and later as an army.” Thus, simply, the word “partisan” shall forever have a good connotation for me, spelling the uprising against Fascists. Lest anybody forget: Fascists are to be fought against, guerilla or otherwise.

And yet here I am, in the middle of Italy where Fascism started as a revolutionary movement.

Anyway, before I dive too deep, doors are not the point as much today, no matter how it’s Thursday and all. We return to the blood-soaked soil of Goriška Brda, “Slovenian Tuscany”, and the village of Šmartno with its lovingly restored houses. We shall have a look at one house in particular that is home to a coffee bar and an exhibition hall, and has many interesting nooks. The rest are the remaining photos of Šmartno doors – this is already the third Thursday Doors post from here, which makes this tiny village the (potential) Door Capital of the World.

And here is fabulously poignant quotation for today. Beware the one-of-us mentality. They are trying to sell you something.

When the axe came into the forest the trees said the handle is one of us.
― Alice Walker (quotation reblogged from Logical Quotes)

Or to borrow the FB pun of the morning by Slovenian painter Arjan Pregl:

OF course.

    1. Thank you, Kevin. Enjoying my Partisan soundtrack today quite far away from my victorious homeland. But how victorious is it, seeing that I am in Italy instead? 😉

Once more your fantastic history lesson has given me much to think about. I have never heard the quotation you used, and it sent chills up my spine. Thanks.

    1. Thank you very much, Carol. Exactly this kind of chills is what I was aiming for. Soon there will be nobody who was alive then. The legacy much go on.

These ‘movements’ always spring out when there is a period of crises…they take advantage of people’s fears * sigh *

    1. Yes, Sara, fears and impulses. For example, amore is the most impulsive person I’ve ever met. Now… I don’t know if it’s because he is Italian or it just happened. 😉 But I know that Slovenians, for instance, are highly fearful, especially of the “others”.

Yeah, as a tendency we are impulsive…I confirm. Sometimes it depends on the subject or problem we are facing, though.

Here, it goes much further than doors – your deep convictions come out, which also reveal you had a different fight in life than I had. It brings to my mind why in my teens I clashed with my parents – they came out of the second world war with a prison camp, but they raised me in a free land. These are my out-loud thoughts, but rethorical:):)

    1. Oh, Jesh, I might have convictions and certain upbringing instead of religious, but that doesn’t mean that I personally know anybody who was fighting in the war, for example. All my relatives were elsewhere engaged. And I’ll add, luckily. I cannot imagine how coming out of a prison camp might be. 😮 Anyway, we all must just take care not to judge another according to their convictions. We all have had separate lives that have lasted until here and now. As for the future, we shall see. Thank you for your comment.

Much deeper than just doors today, but a timely reminder that the lessons of history must be taught over and over to each generation. And even then as we see currently in many places, there is still no guarantee we don’t make the same stupid mistakes yet again.

  13. Um, what you (and the supporters of Slovenia’s April 26 “Liberation Day” which does not mark any liberation so much as a meeting in Ljubljana) are asking me to believe – and it actually does not matter much – is that the OF knew Hitler was going to betray the Hitler-Stalin pact two months before Stalin did. If so, why didn’t they tell him? Probably they were more focused on the imperialism of Britain, America and France than the then-fashionable fascism of Germany and Italy. I know this is a history of some dispute and of course they were against Hitler as soon as he invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941. But what was in their minds in April 1941? Nazism was called socialism too, and at that time its most salient feature for the ideologically obsessed would have been a rather similar anti-imperialist stance to Moscow’s, given what had happened with Hindenburg and von Papen. So anti-Hitler from the start? Probably no more than anti-any-other-foreigner – as we continue to observe in the Slovenian backwoods today.

    1. Oh, thank you for your novel, well-expressed and completely bonkers opinion. (It’s “Liberation Front Day”, Liberation Day comes later). I guess a time-traveller was present at the meeting. That or a good coffee-grounds read that morning. Something wicked must have swayed them away from following the popular opinion which is such a logical thing to do, right? As for the anti-foreigner stance that is truly a problem in Slovenia – it must stem from all those foreigners who come to defecate on our heads.

      Like

      1. Duh-bate! 1) Slovenia (and the human race in general) seems to do a pretty good job of the head-defecating without foreigners. 2) What are foreigners? 3) Bonkers I don’t mind, but I thought debating politico-economic ideologies was the big fashionable thing to do in Slovenia.

In that respect I find the little-discussed similarities in economic policy between NSDAP and the Soviets more intriguing than the differences. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economy_of_Nazi_Germany i.e. autarky, nationalisation, inclusive social welfare programs (unless you weren’t included for foreigner reasons, like Slovenia today).

In both cases a populist dogma was accompanied by wholesale theft, and the elimination of “alternative” totalitarianisms. https://www.marxists.org/archive/mandel/1990/xx/tecon.html

Who today thinks of anti-bureaucratism when Trotsky is mentioned, or would associate the Fuhrer’s Minister of Economics with a kind of soft expropriative Zionism? Intelligence and individualism is the common enemy. While I was bopping to Hawkwind the trendy folks in LJ were listening to Oto Pestner.

It’s not as if there isn’t a danceable alternative, but they are never going to have that kind of dancing in Ptuj http://www.maria.si

People allowed themselves to be enclosed, closed down, mistreated and manipulated then, and for neuropsychopharmacological reasons the majority always will: http://www.nfl.si/bus

The popular appeal of the improbable autarkies of Brexitrump is just the latest result. Instead of just Jews, other others have taken their place. These – the 99% – have all been Schacht on.

  15. Got lost in the discourse above so I’ll keep it simple; love the simple, wooden door in your side panel, Manja. Monuments are created to remember good and bad things of the past and sadly, as time goes on the younger generation cannot relate to the past, which is unfortunate. If the world thinking could be reduced to finding beauty in such things as doors humankind might prosper and set a new course away from hate and destruction but maybe that is just wishful thinking.
