Today used to be Day of Youth in Yugoslavia. Now it’s only the Towel Day. Have some crazy heads and shutters from Rome, and if you behave, you might be hitched off before the world is torn down for that hyperspace bypass.
All of these were taken merely a few blocks apart in Rome’s Monteverde district.
Usually it’s easy to guess what these shops are selling, even, or especially, when they are closed and the shutters come down (or is it roll-ups?). In any case, in order to enter they must be opened first, which classifies them as doors.

Such amazing artists out there. My husband’s a cyclist, so I have to go with the door to the bike shop, but the others are all wonderful. Towel day?

Oh, Janet, yesterday your comment went to spam for some reason. Thank you! As art there are certainly grandest pieces in this world, but I like the combination of usefulness and decoration. Towel Day is celebrated to honour Douglas Adams and his “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” trilogy in five books. In there there is a supposition that if you pack a towel, which you always should, people might assume you have everything else with you as well. (Heavily paraphrased. Really, you’ve never read it? I bet you’d love it.)

This is something that we lack in North America. Many Canadian cities have strict guidelines on what constitutes graffiti, and so having something like this on a door would actually result in the property owner being fined if they did not scrub it off. It’s a well meaning law, but it is very misguided in what it considers “graffiti” and so unfortunately, it results in our cities being a little less colourful than those around the world. Thanks 🙂

Oh, Joanne, nothing else to do but open the “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” and start reading. 🙂 So many things will come together just right. In the words of my mom after she did that: “This guy is nuts!”
As for the doors, I have a feeling there is some sort of coordinated action going on with these, but have no proof of it. To me they seem to be drawn by the same hand, no?
