Thursday Doors, June 15 2017

Without further ado, I give you the Duomo on the hill. On the right, do you see it?

The Cathedral of Orvieto in Umbria, from all angles, mostly with doors, including the neighbour’s. No wonder Orvieto is one of my top ten smaller middle Italian towns. It was a pleasure and privilege to visit it with my American girls. And I haven’t even been inside the Cathedral yet! (Not because photography is forbidden.)

I don’t edit much even on an idle day, but due to a new visitor these are especially as is. Enjoy.

    1. Thank you, Dan. Deep blue frying skies, yes. I always forget how hot it gets here, and it’s only mid June.

      2. According to your utility (thank you!), two days ago when we were there my car showed 100F, in a month or so it will be up to 105F or more. Today I turned on A/C in our home. A whole new world.

Italy…three times in Italy…should have stayed with the girl in Milan longer, but I didn’t. Life is choices made, missed chances, and accidents. Not much more. Thanks. Duke

    1. Right you are. Even though if you ask born Romans, Milan is already in Austria. 😉 Go south, young man.

The black and tan stripes of the marble are (one of my) favorite memories from the churches and cathedrals. It is very striking and memorable, as are your reflecting doors. Have fun with your visiting friends Manja!

    1. Thank you, Denny. 🙂 We have a local primary school that is red-and-white striped in this way. Italians, always in style.

First I thought you changed blog themes, but it’s still the same one, right? Wow, this church is a shocker! But worth your big images!
It’s like -how much can I “customize” the exterior? I imagine the interior looks similar… a great find, Manja:)

    1. Yes, Jesh, it’s still the same, Dyad, just the format is “image”. I must see the interior too one day. They had a huge cathedral competition in those days, it appears. And we all profit. 🙂 Thank you!

Was going back and forth for a long time between Dyad and Bushwick. I chose this one for now, because I couldn’t get used to the small images. But I LOVE the first impression of Dyad.
Haha, never thought about them having a competition of the cathedrals;) Wished they had continued that competitiveness. In Southern Cal went to one in the business district. I loved the people, but no sense for decorum whatsoever. Everything was straight and no color scheme!

That’s a pretty fantastic church. Is that fresco on the front or mosaic?

    1. I had to Google this and it appears they are all mosaics. Interesting! Thank you, John.

Gorgeous shots of an amazing building. The black and white exterior walls remind me of the one in Siena but I guess this is a common design style there?
The reflection shots are my faves. Overall it looks like I have another place to add to my Italian bucket list, but I’ll make sure to go in September and not June or July 😉

    1. Oh, yes, late September! 🙂 Thank you, Norm, I’m glad you like it and that my photos make you wish to visit. Yes, the stripes are always in fashion around here, as I said above the local primary school is red-and-white stripey too.

Well it’s just RIDICULOUSLY BEAUTIFUL, isn’t it?!?? I mean really! WOWZA!
That reminds me of Tori Amos’ screamin at cathedrals. Phew!
I love, love, love the reflection of you in those doors. Magnificent!

    1. Ahh, I made Joey burst out in caps. 😉 Thank you! Tori Amos I know but not this song, will search for it. Around here they are definitely to scream at.

  16. FINALLY revisiting this post. Love love love it! So glad to have shared this day with you. The cathedral, no matter what, cannot be represented in a photo (not to say at all that your photos are anything but lovely!!) It is so astoundingly grand and beautiful. Seeing it in person was just a big humbling wow.

    1. Thank you, Liz, you’re right – seeing is believing. And on the inside photography is forbidden anyhow…
