Thursday Doors, November 16 2017

I love my doors. I love my sister. I love my gelato. I love my dog. I love Siena. Sometimes it all comes together.

I love Thursday Doors, and yet I am so behind in going through yours. I have months worth of door links saved. I know that you don’t but don’t worry. Eventually I’ll visit you all.

In the meantime, the door image that most impressed me recently was due to fab Fabrizio from Are we there yet? It might be from Pienza or Montalcino, evidence is inconclusive. (ADD-IT: He says that it’s Pienza Cathedral’s labyrinth.) Let’s see if he makes his own door post one of these days.

I remember the first time I came to Siena. I felt sucked in right away. It felt out of time somehow, as if the town didn’t know that centuries had passed and there were different times now and you couldn’t be that up and down and curvy and raw sienna coloured.

I entered an ancient looking shop and bought some bread in passable Italian to distinguish myself from tourists and shared it with bestia. And yet I didn’t mind the hordes, for the first time. I felt the town beneath and knew it was old and wise enough to be bothered by visitors not in the slightest.

These photos are from April, the third and last time I was there. The third time you realise that the doors don’t just look the same but actually are. Following four door posts (two from the first two visits and two from the last one including Cathedral doors), today’s 20 images exhaust my Siena doors.

Now I need to go back.

This time I didn’t have to buy any bread. With sister we came prepared with directions to a tavola calda for lunch and a gelateria saved into the phone. Of course, the phone died. Luckily Siena is not all that big, we memorised the names of the places and both names were recognised by passers-by and we were pointed in the right directions. So old school! The second one was Kopa kabana, with very useful doorsteps right next door.

The light was slowing going and Siena was saying goodbye.

Hey MMM, it’s Pienza! The Cathedral’s labyrinth to be precise. Glad to have made it on your Thursday doors post 🙂

    1. You’re welcome, Fabrizio! I was not sure because this photo appears twice in your gallery, did you notice that? But thanks, I’ll amend the caption. I know that now you’ll start paying more attention to doors. This is how door magic works. 😀

I love that first photo, the featured doors, all the wooden and arched doors and the pictures of the pup. Phew, that’s a lot to love, but you got it all.

    1. Thank you, Dan. That’s Italy having it all, not me. 😉

I love the pigeon’s door – you caught the light coming through the window beautifully.

  7. Beautiful doors, as usual, Manja. My newest granddaughter is called Sienna, but her parents have never been there, they just loved the name.

Oh these were all wonderful. Excellent choices.
From the time we were there in 2013 I don’t remember noticing any doors that weren’t gorgeous, or classy, or impressive in some way. I’m sure that they have plain doors there, but life’s too short for boring doors 😉

    1. Thank you, Norm. I think we have the sensor that doesn’t even detect boring any more. All thanks to you who help us keep it fresh.

Your dog wrangling face is priceless! Somehow your images look different – is is a photo edit, or did you edit your photos before and not in this case?

    1. Thanks, Jesh. In what way different? I upgraded to Windows 10 in the meantime and now edit photos with its Photo Gallery, but not heavily, just as I always did with the previous Windows. I haven’t heard from anybody yet that they can see the difference. In some of these photos the light was strange but I couldn’t choose.

You answered my question, even though you didn’t know what I was asking:):)
For a (good, cough – cough) artist light is extremely important. In the past the light (and texture) in your photos was very consistent. In this post, the light varied. So, from you saying that in some of your photos “the light was strange” I knew you had not used a photo edit here.

      2. In Siena, you don’t have light, light has you. 😉 And it was going slowly for the day. I love it how you notice the light, as the artist. I can see that as I look around with my camera, I’m more and more attracted to the light and not so much to subjects any more. I’d say this is good. 🙂

    1. Hehe, SMSW, I’m always up for doors but these are from April. Haven’t been anywhere lately. :p Soon Slovenia again… Today was 4 degrees in the morning and amore had to remove ice from the windshield. (*gasp*) I hope you are great!

      1. Ooh that chilly!!! ❄️ Over here it’s supposed to snow soon. It’s been rainy. The boys are getting teeth so the zen tranquility we had for a while is gone for now 😂 But all is good!

      2. Yeah! I wonder if the first teeth are as sharp with humans as they are with dogs. 😀 I bet you’re finding it out yet…

    1. Yes, RayNot, Siena is the place to be. Tourism crowds with dog – not such fun. In his case, “trained” is relative. 😀

Not surprisingly, you have another lovely collection of doors and you bookended them perfectly – with the slightly sinister door at the beginning, and the peek-a-boo nude at the end. Thanks for the laugh 🙂
