Since I’m with you these days, we better not waste time on computer, right?
Therefore just a selection of some of my favourite photos of you, one of your poems and my translation.
The last photo is rather revealing of your preferences, which becomes obvious to all who have read your book of poems. Here is one, first in Slovenian straight from the book “Darilo” / “Present”:
And this is my translation:
Cake, by Meta Maksimovič
Cake is a pile of dough
sweet to taste
and in between some cream
for layers to paste.
Sometimes moms buy cake,
or make it themselves
if they know how to bake.
I wish to eat cake every day,
not just on my birthday.
The most I laugh in cases
when cakes hit people’s faces.
After I eat three pieces
my tummy in protest hisses.
(Another poem can be found in my last year’s birthday greeting.)
What can I say, mom… It must be that your love of cake has been inherited. Love of potatoes not quite as much (you are a member of Slovenian Society for the Recognition of a Sautéed Potatoes as a Main Dish) but here is a nice Slovenian proverb that goes well with the potato photo above: “A stupid farmer has fat potatoes.” 😀
Mom, you are sixty-ten now. Let’s celebrate and then continue in this direction. After all, as you like to say, there is none of us getting any younger.
Photo: a © signature mmm production (except “Potatoes” and “Branco”)
What a loving birthday wish. And I love the poem.
