My Prague post

Recently Prague posts abound. Here is mine. Good memories from an unexpected concert trip four years ago.

Indeed I’ve been seeing many Prague posts lately, but the incentive to make my own came from a FB comment under another ten best European cities list. Let’s see if I can remember them all: Paris, London, Rome, Firenze, Venezia, Prague, Bruges, Vienna, Budapest, Salzburg. (The others I’ve seen but for some reason I have never been to Belgium. Why?) The comment said that Prague was overrated and didn’t deserve to be included in this list. That made me sad. My memory of it is splendid and not just on account of the occasion.

You know how sometimes, very rarely, you are offered a space in the car, a concert ticket and a hostel bed for three nights? In Prague, of all places? For PEARL JAM, of all bands? You don’t?

I snatched the offer faster than that time when I was invited to Los Angeles. In comparison, both invitations to visit Italy, the first one to visit, the second one to stay, were accepted only after MUCH more consideration. Even though Italy has three cities on that list! 😀

The fact that I had never met any of my fellow travellers to Prague before didn’t carry any weight. Any Pearl Jam fan is a friend of mine already.

Here are some views from our days. It was July, almost exactly four years ago then, and so hot that every late afternoon a heat storm broke out. (Photos enlarge upon clicking.)

The fact that X played as the opener was another unexpected treat. It was the happiest crowd and the coolest vibe out of all my now already nine Pearl Jam shows. Well, I tend to say yes. Here is a fun post from my first blog showing you my world destinations in the first map and PJ shows in the second.

And here is the full Pearl Jam show for the memories and the curious. One of fully unexpected benefits of the internet if you asked me years ago – to be able to relive a show in its entirety.

And in case you are wired differently, or even if you’re not, here is some Smetana (in my language it means “Cream”) with his famous composition on the theme of Prague’s river Vltava.

    1. Oh, Jan, thanks, but we were really just walking around in a very easy manner. I’m sure we missed many sights worth seeing, but that’s why it’s always good to return.

I too was in Prague four years ago! In November though 🙂 Those underground tiles, totally forgot them. Your photos brought back all the memories 🙂

    1. Glad to hear it, Ada. 🙂 I was once before, years ago, with my parents. Not so many tourists yet. Locals were more greedy, trying to cheat us on every corner back then. Somebody even stole my guide book off a restaurant table: when I returned some half hour later, no sign of it. I was happy to be able to swear in my language and they understood.

  5. I enjoyed this little tour. The church really grabbed me, for some reason. And the subway!

    1. I’m glad, Claudia. It’s quite fairy-tale-like, all of it.

      1. Yes, I don’t care what the surveys say or travel books or people, this city looks just fantastic. You are lucky to live so close to so many places like this.

I too had seen the “Prague is overrated” comments and didn’t agree. The Prague I visited 2 years ago was a treasure to discover and I have wonderful memories of my time there – in the blistering heat of mid-summer.

Thanks for taking us on this tour. I loved all your photos, but especially the one you labelled ‘rather aggressive’. I really like the angle you used for that photo – it’s so much better than any I took!!

    1. Oh, thanks, Joanne, I’m glad you agree. Believe me, I’ve taken many photos and most look like every Prague photo I’ve even seen. 😀 Nice that you find it interesting.

That’s a bit of a problem with very popular tourist sites – getting a truly unique photo is virtually impossible.
The way I look at it is – they’re MY photos 🙂

OK…made it here!! I LOVE this killer line: “You know how sometimes, very rarely, you are offered a space in the car, a concert ticket and a hostel bed for three nights? In Prague, of all places? For PEARL JAM, of all bands? You don’t?” However, I’m not a real big Pearl Jam fan. Just never quite got into them. You got the whole concert here? Love your photos. I went to many of the same places. I would guess your hostel building is from the Communist Architecture period??? You see that kind of flat, featureless…well, quite ugly…stuff in many of the countries they hung out in. Great post, glad I finally found it.

    1. Thank you, Badfish, I’m glad you like it. Yes, it’s the entire happy show in the link. I love it how he starts to sing Angie and the audience doesn’t pick up the lyrics to continue. 😀 Young people… And the way he speaks Czech is hilarious. At the end he says that we’re gonna have a beer now and that he is paying. Yes, the Communist Architecture period was only good for making us so happy to see other kinds of architecture when we visit abroad. I wonder if those fig trees give good shade already after four years.

I thought his Czech was pretty good. Since all I can say is nas dravie…which seemed to be all I really needed, though there were no signs in English, no menus in English, and many people didn’t speak English. I’d say, yeah, you could sit under those fig trees and get shade by now.

      2. In Slovenian it’s similar: Na zdravje! And to your health as well! 🙂
