Destination everywhere

I’m letting you in on another of my lists to let you see the level of my crazy preparedness. And then I don’t go anywhere.

I like to think that my as-I-go painstakingly compiled lists – of books to read (which is here), of movies to see (which I haven’t shared yet), and this one, of places (in Italy) to visit – are the best things I can offer to the world. That is, hopefully, until I write something.

This post shares its title with a slowly growing word file where I collect my destinations neatly with the times required to get there and the general direction to take. The title comes from my favourite track from the soundtrack of the film that I loved and watched and rewatched a million times.

After switching to Windows 10, I was worried for a moment that my Google Maps had lost its saved locations. On the contrary, now they are displayed in three colours where before there was only one. It took me a while to get it: They talk! My laptop and my phone!

My position is more or less where the big purple star is and the times are shown from there. As you can see, destinations galore.

That big island on the left is Corsica, which is already French. My territory lies between Florence at the top centre and Rome down there, covered with yellow circles (but in this post we shall leave Rome alone). A few destinations lie outside this area, for example Matera which is amazing but also 6 hours to the south.

The name of this region that stretches more or less south of Pisa all the way to Civitavecchia is Maremma, and the coast closest to me around Orbetello is called Costa d’Argento, “Silver Coast”. Not a bad place to live. At all.

And since I’m a good soul, I decided to share my list with anybody who stumbles upon this post. It is not meant to be read through, which will only yield in a multitude of names and times, but it might land a hand in choosing a trip. The list is limited to the towns I haven’t visited yet, which eliminates such jewels as Il giardino dei tarocchi, Terme Saturnia, Pitigliano, Sovana, Porto Ercole, Porto Santo Stefano, Orvieto, Civita di Bagnoregio, to name but a few.

The way I collect the locations is by stumbling upon a lovely view or description in a blog or Facebook post, on Twitter or in an article. Sometimes it’s not more than a feeling that I’d like it there so do not blame me if once you arrive you don’t find anything special. But with this being Italy, there is not much chance of that. I wish to thank everybody for the ideas, especially Donna from The Maremma Guide.

I’ll do my best to actually visit all these places, but I have a feeling that Italy is for life and thus I’m taking it easy and slowly but surely. By posting this list I merely intend to show you how many there are. A photo of a place I’ve already experienced accompanies each general direction.

The indication Borgi più belli means that the town is part of the initiative of Italian small towns of historic interest.

I wish us all happy Italian journeys!

That’s quite an ambitions list. I wish you all the best in crossing them all off (and sharing a few doors from each one).

    1. That last one is for certain, Dan. I feel better having these places in front of me like this, sort of like unread books on the shelf. When I wish, I can go right… there. All I need is get off my ass. :p

    1. Thanks, Simon. I’ve been! But I wish to return, it was too short a visit. I remember the almost abandoned village with a great view but we didn’t stop to take photos of that pool in place of the main square.
